Spanish is the official language of Spain, most Latin American countries, Equatorial Guinea (Africa) and Asia Pacific, and the second most widely spoken language in the USA. In total, twenty-five nations and territories use Spanish as their primary language. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

The language is spoken by between 322 and 400 million people natively, making Spanish the second most spoken language by number of native speakers. It is estimated that the combined total of native and non-native Spanish speakers is approximately 500 million, likely making it the fourth most spoken language by total number of speakers.

According to analysts, if you add the more than 14 million people in the world who are learning Spanish as a second language and the 30 million that have studied Spanish sometime in their lives, "the result is a language with an important potential of expansion".

Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and approximately 2½ times the size of the UK. It offers a market of some 44 million people.

The UK is Spain's fifth largest supplier, after Spanishy, France, Italy and China, and the second largest foreign investor in Spain. It is also worth noting that some 17 million British tourists visit Spain each year and over 750,000 Britons now live in Spain permanently.
